A Letter from the DMV

It's public knowledge that I dislike driving and would be estatic to "lose" my license and have to take the train, bart, cycle or be driven around. In the past year I have had some bad luck in receiving moving violations. So I received a letter from the DMV. It sounds like an after school special intervention letter. I almost didn't believe it....so are some of my favorite excerpts
  • We do not want you to suffer those consequenses and want to help you avoid them.
  • We understand that you may believe you are a good driver
  • Good, caring people who make careless decisions
  • we are offering you a choice
  • we believe you are capable of makeing a change

i'm going to frame this letter and hang it on my wall for comic relief.

Book Review: The Baby Business

An interesting read...I don't remember how I came about finding this book...I got it awhile ago and found the topic interesting as of recent years, quite of few friends of mine have gone through IVF with differing results. It's often painful to be a supportive friend because seeing a couple go through round after round unsuccessfully. This also talks about adoption and the business of getting babies into the hands of childless couples.

Movie Review: A Scanner Darkly

Interesting movie concept. It's not a cartoon and it's not just a movie...instead an enhanced movie. So the deal was that they filmed this movie and then added like a layer of digital whatever on top of it, saving them tons of money and time since they no longer needed to be worried about makeup or wardrobe. interesting. It gave the movie a quality that made the drug induced paranoia scenes funny instead of sad. Robert Downey Jr plays an addict too well....I mean I know he's been one but it's soo good you wonder when he's acting and when it's real.

No more sweets please

Alas, in Florida there were key lime truffles to buy and coconut rum cakes. Very exciting - not really.

Move over M&M...here come the kisses

Candy coated mini kisses. Hershey's attack at M&M's. Haven't opened the bag yet...and since I'm not the chocolate connoseuir, I will leave the taste test up to Forrest's judgement.

Georgia Peaches

Straight from Hot-Lanta...Peach Bark and Peach Buds candy

Welcome to Miami...Bienvenidos a Miami

Forget the Will Smith song and it's catchy tune. Miami is one place I just don't like. It's all very hot, humid and South Beach is a bit seedy in a tanned, oily, flourescant hot pants sort of way. I honestly tried to like it...and as this was my second visit to the place, I tried but realized it's not for me. I did enjoy the Doral Resort a few years ago...but who wouldn't love that place...it's part of the PGA tour. Oh and aparnetly all of Florida is under construction...they're building high rise condos like crazy out there! The strangest thing is that in Biscayne harboe where I was staying, literally it would be water...edge of land...a sidewalk...then high rise building...talk about waterfront property

Regional Candy - Cow Pie

Nuts, caramel covered in chocolate...an authentic Wisconsin treat. You will notice many more regional candy treats...

SummerFest Wisconsin

So in a previous post I mentioned how I was in Milwaukee WI for work 2 weeks ago. I have to say, it was a good time, albeit it was a short trip. My coworker Kristina is from Racine WI and she rented a car while we were out there so we could be a bit more mobile to grab lunch, airport trips and so she could visit her family. I noticed these funny smiley face stickers on a lot of the street signs and I asked what they were. Apparently there is something called Summer Fest in WI which is essentially a big festival with food and bands and to help people find their way to the good time, they put up these happy stickers all over the place....nice

Betty Triathlon Montage

Sorry no music to this montage...but to see more lovely pictures, go here. I am however, bummed out that they didn't have any pictures of me coming out of the water. Really I want picture of me floating around in the water.....

Forrest Triathlon Montage

For more pics from the event photographer people, go here...
I am contemplating ordering him one of the triple picture things...

Guess Who?

Sam was in charge of taking pictures at the triathlon. We all know this is me, but it's really funny because the balloon just "happens" to be blocking my head. In the next picture the chain link fence just "happens" to be blocking Forrest's head too. His timing is impeccable.
Really...Sam is fired from taking photos...hahahaha. He jokes that he should put these 2 pictures up online together and create a photography business called "Ubstructed Memories"

Donner Lake Sprint Triathlon - Results

So the results are in...photos are on their way when I get them downloaded onto a computer and posted online :) But in the meantime, here is an overview of our times. The swim was 400 meters, a 6 mile bike, complete with 3 mile uphill hike of 1,000 feet and finally a 2.5 mile run which Forrest swears was only 2 miles...meaning that my time really wasn't that great :( Please also keep in mind that we started at about 5,000 or 6,000 feet of elevation...before all the climbing...bleh..swimming in thin air...

Forrest

  • Overall Place 85
  • Time 59:59 minutes
  • Swim 9:35 minutes
  • Swim/Bike 3:33 minutes
  • Bike 30:17 minutes
  • Bike/Run :59 minutes
  • Run 15:39 minutes

Betty

  • Overall Place 243
  • Time 1:20:32 minutes
  • Swim 12:33 minutes
  • Swim/Bike 5:27 minutes
  • Bike 39:42 minutes
  • Bike/Run 1:50 minutes
  • Run 21:04 minutes

Holy Humidity

I thought Atlanta was hot...but the humidity is even crazier. So in order to not fight the humidity, I am wearing my hair au natural = curly. Well, let's say the gods of hot-lanta won and by the time I got to the airport...I had a big brown fluff ball around my face....previously known as my hair. Didn't know it could get that big.

Minneapolis Modern Surprise

Going there tomorrow..but just read how they are an apparent haven for modern design, especially for large public use buildings like museums, theaters, etc...the pictures looked cool but didn't expect that from deep within the midwest. There is a solar lighting project that is supposed to go live later this year or early next year too that looked really neat-o.

Home of the Cheese

I'm in Milwaukee...I'm in Wisconsin...hory shit....i'm in the home of the Packers. Too , bad it's not football season otherwise I'd stay a few extra days and try to score some tickets...heh - really this place is like my mecca.

In other news - I ate dinner tonight at the revolving rooftop restaurant at the Hyatt Regency. I had the cesar salad and the bacon wrapped scallops. I ALMOST said no to the cheddar croutons, thinking they were just bread with cheese...but oh no my friends...it was DEEP FRIED CHEDDAR CHEESE CUBES.

ps - Apparently George W is in town too...just a few blocks away from where I'm staying hosting a republican fundraiser - crazy.

ps2 - I ate 3.5 Dunkin Donuts today...bleh - thank goodness for O'Hare airport and their Dunkin Donuts :)

Book Review: Running with Scissors

Should have started with this Augusten Burroughs book first....as the other 2 books I recently read make references to things he says in this book. The story is unreal...I know it's a memoir so it's basically his recollection of his childhood and I can't believe this really happened. To be given away to your mother's psychiatrist as pre-teen and to have your first sexual realtionship be with someone more that double your age - who is now legally your brother.

It's an amazing story of survival in that he could have fallen in between the cracks but instead prevailed and has been able to share this insance story with the rest of us. Definately worth a read - if you want it I have a copy to share...

Guess Who's Coming???

oooooo...it's been on my Amazon wishlist for soooo long..and at long last, it will be out next month! Now if only a cable network would pick up the show so I can watch cute Michael Bluth navigate that nightmare of his family.

On the road again...

Leave it to me to overbook myself...

I'm traveling for work this week...jsut got into Chicago this morning at 6am Central Time... Will be hitting up Milwaukee and Minneapolis this week before heading back to SF late Thursday night.

Friday we're off to Tahoe for the triathlon...staying the weekend up at Donner Lake (hopefully I can spend Saturday trying to even out some of these god awful tanlines...

Monday morning I'm off on an early flight to Atlanta, Miami then Tampa...for work....and heading back late again on Thursday night to SF.

That Sunday is the Wharf to Wharf race - HA!

At least I won't be missing out on any workouts really, geez....

Book Review: Da Vinci Code

Just finished this book. I am so glad it's over - I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad I'm done with the book. It was quite possibly the most painful reading experience I've had lately. The premise is very interesting...but i couldn't wait to be done with the book because I kind of hated it. I can see how it's a love it / hate it type of book. You definately won't find me in line for the movie anytime soon - that's for sure.

High Altitude Triathlon

And so the countdown begins. The triathlon is this Sunday up at Donner Lake. Forrest and I went up there 2 weeks ago and did a test run of the course...much to my dismay the "short course" does not make this any easier because of the elevation. We'll be staying at the Lake Donner Resort or something like that. Sam will be coming to root us on and we'd love to have more peeps there to join us in the frenzy...plus it's kind of nice up there by the lake.

The 6 mile bike ride sounds SUPER EASY until you realize that it's 3 miles uphill and 3 miles downhill. Climbing 1,000 feet is not that hard, unless you're already 6,000 feet up above sea level...can anyone say "lack of oxygen?" It took about 45 minutes to go uphill and about 3 minutes to come down. I can only imagine the carnage of cyclists on race day at the bottom of the hill. I gotta remember to make sure my brakes are engaged after I put the tire back on..heh

Movie Review: Devil Wears Prada

Today started with a 9 am bike ride with Linh and Hiroko in the Palo Alto around my office/Stanford University area.... we then progressed to the movies to watch "The Devil Wears Prada" and then off to a string of stores for assorted shopping and finally ending up in downtown Mountain View for a hot bowl of ramen at Ryowa.

Movie was pretty good...having read the book I definately noticed some differences in the story but the movie kept good pace and was entertaining. I actually really liked Meryl Streep's interpretation of Miranda...the ice bitch.... The ending was different..I think I liked the book ending better. Total chick flick but worth watching in the movies because you can see the outfits a lot better that way..heehee

In Touch Horoscope

You question your future and wonder where you're headed. The answers will be clearer soon. In the meantime, keep working - or get started on a self-improvement plan.

That's my horoscope from InTouch magazine. I know I'm headed to Chicago tomorrow night so I guess the answer is as clear as my travel itinerary.

Movie Review: Superman

On IMAX, in 3-D no less. So much movie - my eyes hurt from all the optical stimulation...

Gary Danko

Friday night Forrest and I headed over to Gary Danko for dinner. The word "YUM" does not do this place justice. I have been counting down the days for 2 months for my reservation date to arrive....and at long last it is here. My only regret is that I didn't have a camera with me to take pictures of the food :(

What did I eat???
  • Seared Foie Gras with Bing Cherries (2 gigantic seared pieces!! woooo hoooo!)
  • Maine Lobster with Mashed Potatoes & Chantrelles (creamiest mashed potatoes ever!)
  • Cheese Course (yes, i almost cried)

What did Forrest eat
  • Corn and Arugula salad with tomato vinaigrette
  • Lamb with curried chickpea
  • Cheese Course
  • Coconut Bavarian with Pina Colada Sorbet and Mango Tapioca

Thought I was too full after the cheese course...but alas, I mad room to steal half of Forrest's dessert. The mango tapioca was pretty f-ing awesome. The cheese cart at GD is pretty amazing...it's a mobile cart of solid, semi solid and runny aged milk products... the stinker and gooey-er the better. The ghedder (goat cheddar), ice cream blue, p'tit basque and runny orange rind chese were the top cheese of the night.

Prices are deceiving inexpensive...with 3 course meals starting at $61. The thing is the wine pairing is more expensive when you opt for the coursed meals instead of prix fixe. Regardless my belly was happy.
