In the movie, Remember the Titans, one of the African American football players puts a poster depicting the above image in his dorm room wall. It reminded me of an article I recently read. These young men were making a silent statement about the racial conflicts happening in America at the time. It is a powerful and moving picture and to me has a greater impact than watching an angry mob protest with signs. The symbolism of the black socks without shoes, the different raised hands with different meanings, the medals and bowed heads....
It was interesting to learn that these young men were members of the San Jose State track team and recently a statue was erected at the downtown San Jose campus to honor these men. It was sad to learn that what was captured on this image caused them a lifetime of pain and suffering....but good to know that their pride in their actions are carried through to this day.
