This is a picture of one of the battery thingys (for lack of better terminology on my part) on the island. So the middle circle area was where the cannon/gun thing would sit while they shot at attackers coming in through the bay. Cannons and Guns

There are other batteries located around Land's End and Fort Point. They housed huge cannons to prevent attackers but were never fired. They were taken down after WWII because aircraft deemed the cannons obsolete.
Still, their foundations provide great views and have housed underground dance parties in the past.
