Giorgios Pizza

Down on Grand River Ave close to the MSU campus in East Lansing is a little place called Giorgios Pizza...they have your standard pizza combos like the pepperoni and sausage on the left...but they also have yummy fun combos like the potato bacon on the right. It's not like a CPK type of place...where you have BBQ chicken pizza (gross) but bacon and potato...for some reason - works

T&A's new digs

Tree lined midwestern streets...looks like something out of a movie, really. The houses on this street were brick and wood siding with shuttered windows and manicured lawns. Lots on big bushy trees on the the preperties as well as along the sidewalks.

The Great Room

This is called the "great" room - and I guess it's a combination dining room, kitchen and family room...but this room was friggin HUGE. It faced the back of the house - and until the entertainment center (pictured above) arrived on Friday afternoon, all the furniture basically looked a little dwarfed in there. BTW - you can see Bosley in the lower right corner wondering why this crazy asian chick is taking pictures instead of letting him outside and playing catch with him like a good visitor.

Let's go Spartans, Let's GO!

I'm hopping on a plane tonight to go visit Tom and Angie (and Bosley) pictured above for the weekend. This will be a weekend of hanging out in the midwest eating lots of meat and drinking lotsa beer...mmmm. We will be tailgating as usual - at the BIG GAME which is Michigan State versus University of Michigan. I swear to god, in the midwest...football is like religion - super fun. I get to uber indulge...this year some things will be different
  • Tom has since graduated law school so he won't be mucking up our partying schedule by studying or anything
  • Tom and Angie have moved to a new home in Plymouth MI and so therefore I won't see the living room where the above picture was taken...I have also be tapped to help select paint colors for the rooms of their new casa
  • MSU is favored to win for the first time in 30 years so campus will basically resemble Sodom and Gammorah during the destruction that god sent them - SWEET
  • I get to FINALLY play porn hole (more details and pictures later)
  • Jessica (a fellow DG from Santa Clara) and her husband just moved to Michigan where she is attending law school and will be joining our tailgate
Also, I get to go to Playmakers which is a PIMPIN running store out there and buy a bunch of stuff...in fact, I will be on the hunt for a new pair of Nike Air Pegasus shoes as my Air Max Motos are not quite what I want for any distance longer than 5 miles....arg

Kangmania

Last night I went running out on the Los Gatos Creek Trail to do a 6 miler...started out at the Campbell park and ran to Lark Avenue then turned around. I just realized that summer is officially over - it was dark by the time I got to Lark Ave and had to run back in the dark...not so fun.

Sam hurt his hamstring last week at softball so he decided to try out my road bike on the trail and basically be my "support vehicle" for the next hour. You know that scene in Tommy Boy where Chris Farley puts on David Spade's jacket and sings that song "fat guy in a little coat" LOL well, Sam looked like a fat guy on a skinny bike. Anyone who's met my brother knows he's not fat, just kinda beefy from working out so much - so looking at him with his wide ass shoulders sitting on such a skinny bike was hilarious - meanwhile trying to pedal on my clipless pedals with regular running shoes.

Post workout - I felt the need to eat a more healthful meal after the day's ravishing - so we headed off to Sushimania...need I say more?

End of quarter diet...

Brought in Krispy Kreme donuts and a 7 layer dip today in honor of the end of quarter madness that usually occurs amongst our sales people. I've already eaten 2 donuts and will soon crash from my sugar high.

A Lesson in Endurance

This weekend was spent doing 2 different excercizes for about 2 hours each..HAHA. I know, who would have thunk that I would have turned into such an excercize junkie. A 10 mile run on Sat at Sawyer camp and a 30 mile bike ride on Sunday. Surprisingly enough, I feel pretty good...it's Tuesday and nothing hurts or is sore...so I'm now off to the gym to see what other damage I can have my body endure :)

I am an asshole

This weekend was Hollis' TNT fundraiser which I knew I was going to be late to, but in my retardation, I couldn't find an appropriate time to say anything to introduce our exit from an earlier evening engagement to go to the fundraiser party. In essence, it's my fault - and although it's "only a party" I realized this morning that I've missed EVERY single one of Hollis' fundraisers and even her birthday party this year. Really, what kind of big sis am I? There was always a reason, whether it be work, or a prior engagement...but this was the first time I said Yes but didn't show up. I really should feel better since I sent money (because isn't that the point of a fundraiser?) but alas, I feel no better than a flaky parent that gives you $50 for not showing up to yoursoccer game...ugh

Maybe I'm making a big deal about it...maybe too big of a deal, but something about this whole situation hit a nerve and I feel horrible - the phone calls and text messages also helped to cement my feelings of asshole-ness. Even a heartfelt apology feels hollow and empty here.

Brunch at Kate's Kitchen

Sunday morning, had brunch with Forrest and Chester at Kate's Kitchen on Haight by Fillmore. Small and quaint little place where groups of 2 or 4 would probably have to wait quite a bit for a table...but an odd group of 3....well, our table was already awaiting us.

I had a farmers breakfast..nothing exciting there as it's just 2 eggs, meat and bread. Chester had a corned beef hash which was more like cubes of corned beef with potato and veggie chunks tossed in. Forrest had the orange spice french toast, which I must say was the most yummy/interesting meal of the morning. Also, they had a really cool map mural-painting thing on the wall, which Chester couldn't take a picture of, because he forgot his camera.

Dinner at Citizen Cake

Friday night went to dinner with Forrest to Citizen Cake in Hayes Valley. We've been there previously for dessert and I've picked up some mini cakes and cupcakes from there before which were yummy. Their menu is short (single pager) but filled with some really fun names...a play on words like tomator jell with wasabi "zotz" or pistachio chocolate gondolas...super fun.

Tacos at the Car Wash....

Yes my friends...that's a picture of tres tacos de carne asada from the taco truck parked at the car wash parking lot. mmmmmmm

Race for October

The above title was swiped from MSN on an article about the race to the World Series. That's a picture of the baseball cupcakes that Hiroko made for our skeleton team for last night's game. It was a shame, really....we only had 8 people...4 guys and 4 girls, the absolute minimum needed to play. And even then, we had to wait 20 minutes...because the other team was being so "kind" and not letting us forfeit. Our famed pitcher, Jawed, was unable to attend the game and Kevin filled in but walked a number of people in the beginning...slow pitch softball pitching is a lot harder than you think - - hopefully Jawed will return next week..for the last regular game of the season. Finally, mid-game...my brother pulled a hamstring and we had to forfeit...so it was off to Tasty Subs for pizzas and beers.

I was so defeated by our game that I promtly went home by 8, then was asleep by 8:30 pm. I am now a card carrying member of the geriatric ward.

Free Marketplace Bullshit

So I ordered my coveted Aeon Flux on Amazon.com only to have a John Woo movie "Hard Boiled" shipped to me. I've tried to contact the seller but have not received a reply. This is why I hate buying shit from individuals...now I'm stuck with a DVD in cantonese...

Michael Bluth

OMG...Arrested Development is back on....

Ships Ahoy

Apparently Monday was National Talk Like a Pirate Day. Can you believe there's an entire day devoted to sounding like idiots? That's freakin awesome. So a joke from Corley in honor of Pirate day.....

So a pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel attached to his dick. Another patron walks up to him and says "dude, did you know you have a steering wheel attached to your dick?" To which the pirate replies...."Ayyy matey. They're drivin me nuts."

Book Review: Ultra Marathon Man

I started and finished this book on the plane this weekend. And I've decided that THIS may be too much running. I can sort of understand a marathon...there's a sense of achievement tied to it that's common amongst our culture. I only aspire to achieve half goals, hence I am only running a half marathon. This guy uses marathons as a warm up!!! He regularly runs 100+ miles at a time. Apparently running is what fuels him...and if that's the case - homie, knock yourself out. It's a pretty amazing story about self realization....but I self realized myself to a bag of potato chips when reading this.

Book Review: Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs

I just finished this great book by Chuck Klosterman during my flight back from Boston. This book is a pop culture commentary for those who are part of Generation X...so basically born between 1968 - 1978 and the variety of cultural things that have influenced us and/or the shared experiences amongst people of this generation. This guy is fucking hilarious. His writing style is like Chester's complete with sarcastic footnotes! So, in essence, this book was a 200 page journal posting on chesternet.org...fucking fabulous.

Some of my favorite quotes from the book...(coming soon)

Curtain Call

That's a picture of the finished product in albeit rather dim lighting...but Sunday was spent lounging around watching movies on FX and making curtains for Caroline's dining room. As you can see there, she has a bay window with 3 actual window panes....so we decided to make 4 panels. Her dining room is a light gray and all the molding/wood trim is in a darker gray so she picked a pinkish color for her drapes. What you don't see is that a side table, dining table and chandelier are cream...and the chairs that will eventually go in there will be a rubbed black. So the pink really helped to warm up the room. A dupioni silk was selected at Zimmans...a massive fabric store (I would think that is what Britex is like) with really great rates.

Yes, I do home improvement projects while on vacation. My next stop is Plymouth Michigan to help Tom and Angie with ideas for their new home.

Dinner out in Davis Square

Saturday night Caroline, Lee and I went out to dinner in Davis Square...it's almost like a little downtown area in Somerville. It looks a lot like how dowtown Los Gatos or Willow Glen is situated with little boutique shops, restaurants, bars, tree lined streets with white lights in the trees. Anyhoo...I was surprised when Caroline suggested Indian food...as I never remembered her as liking spicy or extreme curry type flavors like Indian food before. And indian food is not my favorite but I decided to give it a try...so she took me to Diva Indian Bistro. It looked like a hipster's indian restaurant and I almost started to expect some fusion-type food...but no, it seemed pretty authentic based on the number of things I could not pronounce on the menu.

So we ordered...
  • Vegetarian Samosas
  • Chicken Jalfrezi - Caroline
  • Chicken Dosa - Lee (it was this huge crepe like thing...pretty neat)
  • Shrimp Vindaloo - Me (totally diggin the tomato based sauce)

If you'all make it out to Beantown anytime soon...check this place out. Somerville is about 5-10 minutes outside of downtown Boston...you could easily take the T out of Boston proper and hit up Diva.

Puppy Love

Rosas/Shea canine clan pictured above. From left to right: Delaney, Madison and Ripley. Delaney is Caroline and Lee's new puppy and Ripley is Caroline's dad's dog who is kind of like a himbo...super cute but sooooo stupid. When you drive with him in the car, he stands on all fours in the backseat with his ass facing the front seat.

Fore Judy Golf Tournament

So what's a little cake in your face? That's a picture of the Shea family...Mike and Caroline in the front and Bill (C's dad) and Liz in the back. Caroline got the bright idea to smash a slice of cake into her brother Mike's face after the end of the fundraiser.

The trip was filled with so many fun memories...
  • The possibility of seeing Theresa Heinz Kerry at an Ovarian Cancer media launch event at Mass General Hospital
  • Getting up at 430am to setup for the golf tournament
  • Having Delaney pee on me
  • Having Madison poop on me
  • Getting to share in the near-fatality known as Lee's farts

Golf Foursomes

Adam and Nicole (the other half of the golf foursome) before the shotgun start. I golfed with Caroline's cousins Adam, Nicole and Colin on friday morning. Notice the weather is overcast and foggy...yes my friends, that would be the work of hurricane Ophelia.

Dinner in Russian Hill: Zarzuela

Went to dinner with Forrest last night in Russian Hill. We couldn't decide where we wanted to eat (we're both kind of indecisive and there are so many choices in SF) and we watned to try some place new. So the answer was - drive to Russian Hill...then walk around until we find a restaurant and then walk in and start eating! Alas, what we found was Zarzuela...a little spanish style tapas place... And I must say - Yummy.

The baked goat cheese wtih tomatoes was super yum yum....as I am a big goat lover. The lamb skewers were smaller than I had expected and not very attractive but they were good. I can appreciate lamb a little more as I get older[1]. I think the peel 'n eat shrimp kind of wierded Forrest out as he tried in vain to peel the shrimp with his fork and knife. With that sort of food, it is essential to cut use the utensils that come with standard (your hands). The marizpan cake was a little gross though because the marizpan tasted like the refridgerator...ewwwwwwww

So I know quite a number of peeps in the city, namely the entire population of SCU's DG house lives in the Cow Hollow/Marina area. So I always am curious as to whether I will randomly run into them or not...so far not so much - outside of running into Hollis and Sal at Town's End on a Sunday morning even though they both live on the other side of town. But alas, last evening I ran into Janel (Vy's work friend) at Zarzuela and was seated next to her and ?Mark? I think his name was???

Missing Softball

Since I'll be out of state, the Ligers need another lady to play...if you are
1. packing ovaries
2. available thursday night at 6:55 for roughly an hour
3. know what softball is

Please contact our coach at adam.castaldo@nsc.com. We could really use the help.

PTO

What the hell is that? PTO..uh...PTO...I believe that's Paid Time Off?!?!? And yes folks, I am actually taking a few days off. I'm making my way to the right coast to visit Caroline and participate in a slew of Ovarian Cancer activities...

I know it's been donation madness these days - but the JRS Foundation is special to me and especially Caroline. You all know how crazy my mother makes me....but it would suck if she were unexpectedly gone. Caroline and her mom actually got along great - so you can only imagine how much more that must hurt....anyhoo - it can also help save lives in the future.

See you'all later

Race Results...

Craig emailed us runners of the Sunday's Franklin Templeton race results...I think it's funny that he's no longer Craig, but Cla. Regardless, here are the results

Place Name Time Pace
12 Cla 44:01 7:05
45 Forrest 51:45 8:19
104 Betty 1:02:08 9:59

Cla actually came in 10th in the Men's overall..but within our respective age/gender braket (20-34) we came in...

Betty - 22 out of 35
Cla - 4 out of 25
Forrest - 10 out of 25 *

* Forrest ran an additional lap around the Bay Meadows track therefore adding another mile to his total race distance, that explains the longer than expected time - the race course was lame and totally disorganized.

Racing in San Mateo

This morning I ran the Franklin Templeton Memorial 5K/10K race with Forrest and Craig. Susan was going to do the 5K until she read that strollers were not allowed on the course. But alas, upon our arrival and scanning of the crowd realized that many other folks brought stollers and no one was complaining. So next year.

The race started out at Franklin Templeton's corporate offices in San Mateo right where the new Whole Foods, Gold's Gym and housing complex is (where Debbie and Paul used to live). We went around the block then over to the Bay Meadows track where us 10K runners did 2 laps (Forrest did 3 - show off) then back to the start and one more loop around the block (no track running the second time). The course kinda sucked and a bit confusing..Forrest and Craig said the previous course was much better. oh well.

But AHA! My time was 62.25 minutes - so I was a solid 10 minute mile....pimpin

Friday night about town

Last night Forrest and I double dated with Hollis and Sal by going to dinner at Jackson Fillmore on...yes you guessed it folks...Jackson and Fillmore. It's a tiny little Italian place that only takes reservations for groups larger than 3..muy interestante. Food was pretty good although the portion sizes were a little small...the complimentary bruschetta -- HOLY CRAP! That shit was GOOD[1]. Afterwards we cruised over to Sal's pad in Pac Heights for a glass of wine and banter about who's family is more ethnic and overbearing competition between myself and Sal....I think it was a tie.

Afterwards we met up with Chester, Adam, Elliott and Stephanie (visiting from NYC) at Romolo in North Beach. It was amazingly quiet at Romolo...actually it was a quiet night out in North Beach in general. I haven't been to Romolo in over a year and a half and before anyone else gets a chance to say anything, I am gonna say it...last time I was there, I was LOADED and made some apparently bold statements that I am consistently reminded of. So first off I told Chester and Ninos that their friend (Forrest) was cute...they got SUPER wierd (they are worse than girls) so I said that I changed my mind and he was ugly because they are so F-ing wierd. Apparently there was a second statment, but I don't remember saying it...I apparently said I would totally make out with Forrest...oh well..big deal.

[1] "load"ed comments because there was a lot of talk about poop for some apparent reason. We also talked about burping and farting...yes, the dialouge of enlightened minds

You're such a lagger Liger

Last night was softball night for Team Ligers as our most Thursdays between June - October at National Semiconductor. We played the Longshots and we thankfully won after 2 weeks of disappointment out on the field. However this week's game was interesting for a number of reasons:
  • We started out barely having enough people to play to having an overly full roster after the first inning.
  • Vy played with a sprained ankle....side effect of her wild partying lifestyle ;)
  • I played with a minor hole in my foot after stepping on a nail that was hiding in the gravel walkways...
  • Sam and Adam both got home runs
  • Meeta did a backflip after she ineffectively tried to block the runner from getting on first base with her vicious ghetto booty
Afterwards we went over to Tasty Subs instead of our ususal St John's to switch up our post game meal/beers agenda. I gotta say...Tasty Subs is a pretty sweet deal...with a large pizza coming in at around $14 and that including a free pitcher of domestic beer, that's got to be the best meal deal on the planet. Also Meeta mentioned that their happy hour goes until closing - we all deduced that "until closing" is no longer a happy hour but a happy shift. The signage within tasty subs indicates that it's a "Super Power Happy Hour."

See you on the field next week.

It gets easier, I swear...

So I am selling my second item on Craigslist....and it's definately easier this time versus last time. Actually, I take that back, this is my THIRD item that I am selling on Craigslist...as I tried to sell my desktop computer a few years ago. Anyhoo, I am selling the saddle that came with my bike. It is the Specialized Avatar Gel 130 Saddle. I have NO idea what that means, just that there are a few people that want to buy it - apparently it retails for $75 (holy crap) but I'm offering it for a measly $35..pimpin.It looks like a space age funky whatever thingy...but in reality it is a seat that is apparently too narrow for my sit bones. That's what the guy at the bike shop told me...I think he was trying to say that I was fat - just kidding.

Speed Reading

So recently I went on a book buying binge and had stacks and stacks of books to read. I just picked up my next book on the reading list and realized that I only have something like 3-4 books to go....I could probably knock those out in the month of September alone. Plus I've got 2 long flights coming up...one to Boston and one to Michigan..so I'll knock out a book per trip...NICE

Folically Challenged?

That's Chester with a mohawk...not really a faux hawk because his hair is so long it's beyond that stage now. That's almost a 3 inch hair statue man.

Cyclists Weekend

The winner of the Pro Cycling Tour's San Francisco Grand Prix: Fabian Wegman of Gerolsteiner
Spent the entire weekend with some sort of cycling....GEEZ - you wouldn't know it, but I am turning into a road bike geek. As the LVH would tease me, I am currently super focused on cycling. Actually I have no idea why I didn't start this before running....because it hurts less than running...my joints rejoiced with my first bike ride and have ceased the boycott of physical activity..

Saturday: Went on a bike ride with Forrest and Chester along Foothill Expressway from Standord to 280 over by Rancho San Antonio and back...I swear...I LOVE the peninsula...

Sunday: Forrest and I watched the SF Grand Prix from a variety of viewing areas....once at the beginning on the Embarcadero as part of our run, then in the Marina as part of our run's U-turn and later at the finish on the Embarcadero...and finally a post race beer with Alan in the TIAA-CREF hospitality tent - pimpin. Julie sent a link of some great pics over today...

Monday: Cruised down to Levi's plaza with Forrest to meet up with Chester and later the Chinn family to watch Brad race in the Giro di San Francisco criterium. There were a number of races for this including an older racer category, amateur, professional, womens and kids races. Pics available on chesternet...

In conclusion, me entire weekend was spent around large groups of men wearing spandex and legs smoother than mine - slightly frightening.

Movie Review: Broken Flowers

After much discussion on Sunday evening, Forrest and I (sans Chester because he bailed last minute) went to see Broken Flowers. The premise of this movie is interesting if not something that any person may potentially dread...as the most uncomfortable series of situations possible. Can you imagine being in your 40's and visiting all your exes from when you were in your 20's? After 20 years, why on earth would you want to go back and "check in" with your exes...especially because so much may have changed in two decades. YIKES

Book Review: Blink

Just finished Blink by Malcolm Gladwell this morning. I liked the book, it was interesting...all about how in basically the blink of an eye, you would have made a judgement on something, someone, anything ...meaning that your first impression is probably 1. the most lasting impression and 2. the right impression.... However there are some caveats to this, like in times in extreme stress where your heart rate is over 170, you start to lose the power of this cognitive something-or-other and make very poor decisions because your body starts to shut down. There is however a correlation between 115-150 heart rate activity being the most heightened state of alertness and focus...where the hollywood movie efeects of slow motion, tunnel vision and dimished hearing capacity of white noise happens...muy interesante.

He references quite a few other books and studies about human behavior, communication methods and facial expressions that I am finding fascinating....so, there you go, more books for my Amazon list...sheesh

No More Tuff Butt - - Part 2

As part of the "SAVE BETTY'S BUTT" campaign...I purchased a new saddle for my bike today. Last week, Forrest got me some new spandex complete with super-chamois...I was a dumbass and bought spinning shorts on my first trip and my ass has been paying for it ever since (literally). So today I had a 2pm bike fitting at The Bicycle Outfitters where they adjust this thing and that thing to make sure the angles of this part or that part are correct. What was deduced from the appt was that the saddle that came with my bike was made for men...and not hitting my hipbones correctly - therefore the excruciating pain.

Helping Out

Found this on Amazon.com this morning and thought I should post it here, even though I am probably not going to be able to drive a bunch of additional visitors to the site or anything....but it's worth a shot. Also, I am sad that I did not go to Louisiana earlier this year for a business trip, because now I won't ever get to see and experience all of the original wonders of creole country (it sounds selfish...but is meant as a compliment to the fascinations of the south - whether it be food, culture, legends)...by the time I finally make it out there and they've been able to de-flood the area, it'll be filled wtih stucco reinterpretations and McMansions so that any local character might be sucked dry.... Hopefully the people of Louisiana can rebuild their lives and their towns in a way that helps to maintain the soulful personality of the south.

I can't get no....motivation

Dunno what's been wrong with me these days, but I can't seem to get motivated or focused. All I want to do is play Bounce Out, an online video game....and recently I discovered Majohng too.
