One Game Away

That's what Adam says...that we're one game away from #1.

Today was a memorable day in National Semiconductor softball history because our team beat the undefeated softball giants..heh heh. So the deal is that they were undefeated this season...and every previous season we had lost to them with great misery.

But tonight we won...we won 11 to 6 - that's friggin insane! As Adam elequently put it..."I think we scored more tonight than we have collectively in all the games we've played against them"

Now if I could only remember the name of the team we played tonight...

Arg - also a good bye to Sean "Christmas Tree", Casey and Donger (only part time)...3 guys from Sam's office that are all moveing so will no longer be on the team.

Book Review: Magical Thinking

I liked Dry better...but this wasn't so bad. No real point to the book...just a bunch of stories about him and his "magical thinking" like almost willing things to happen through sheer belief. Can't wait to read Running with Scissors though...I've heard that's the best one.

License plates came in yesterday. I almost don't want to put them up....because then it won't seem like a new car anymore :(

But Which Holiday

Last night was my company "holiday party" at the de Young museum. By holiday I mean it's supposed to be a winter holiday party but instead we can say it's for independance day..haha. I gotta say I like the inside of the de Young WAY better than the outside of the de Young museum. The party setup was different rooms with different food / beverage themes. There was a cuban themed area in the outside tent. There was a indian food room with mojitos and 2 white guys playing indian music. The observation deck area had a bar and seating for some lounging....

I find work parties interesting because it's just an odd dynamic. These are people you spend roughly 1/2 your waking hours with on a weekly basis, your shared interests are work and the things you do together at work. You then proceed to have a social event and invite significant others..and alcohol - shake and see what spills out. Some slightly awkward social conversations, some REALLY drunk people and lots of people who just don't bother to show up.

I had a nice time and I think Forrest did too. We were definately not the really drunk people and the conversations that we did have were relatively easy. The food was pretty stellar.

More Muddy Tails

So are I previously stated, our team used a variety of pig related names. It took a few hours to come to that consensus as we initially started with things like "dirty DGs" "muddy girls" something that incorporated suggestive language and marines like "i got down and dirty at Camp Pendleton".....yadda yadda yadda.

SOOOO GLAD we chose the more unique pig names as there were TONS of girl teams as dirty divas, muddy whatevers....but there were some other fun names
  • Mud Stud
  • MudderFockers
  • Dirty Nurses....Code Brown
  • Mud Hens
  • 4 Dogs and a Bun (a team consisting of 4 men and 1 woman - their shirts had 4 hot dogs and 1 additional hotdog in a bun - I found this to be the most hilarious and original)
  • We Love Beaver (with the text on the back and a picture of a beaver on the front. Leave it to college aged fraternity boys to think of that)

Tell me about it

This is a great shirt. All bloggers that I know, Chester included, will be receiving one of this for Christmas.

Inside the madness

That's my doing...trying to keep track of which fruit to eat first...because I apparently can't figure it out on my own what to eat unless I leave a note for my fruit to "speak" to me. A little look into my personal crazy.

Daily Grind

I think I'm going through a low point...where I am tired of training. It seems as though I am always training for something. I want a vacation from working out...bleh.

Next up is the Donner Sprint Tri and the Wharf to Wharf run.

Eating the Exhibits

You say aquarium..i say lunch!

Above is a picture of anchovies in a circular tank thing at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This past weekend was Forrest's parents 40th wedding anniversary so we met up with them and his sister/scott and scott's parents in Carmel for the weekend. We spent some time on Saturday afternoon at the aquarium and I spent the entire time fantasizing about sushi - typical...Molly would be proud. Forrest was just glad I didn't go to any of the petting zoo sections as he as afraid I would just start eating the sea life there - to the horror of the children...

sea fingers

anemone...i think...but it was close the the jellyfish section

jerryfish

herro, i am a jerryfish...and i have no bones...but i taste yummy in this random korean salad that Betty's mom makes on special occasions.

Big Pimpin

Waiting for a chernobyl nut..fattest squirrel ever. Holy crap, these little fuckers were so huge..and had no fear. In fact they would just walk up to people and literally pose their squat not so little bodies over their haunches to "beg" for food. The other lazy ones just laid around in the sun like fur pelts..

One for the picture books

One last family pic...in lieu of a Chester, I tried my best to fill in by digitally preserving memories of Molly's grad school graduation. I am not as skilled in the candid photographs a la Chester, but instead make people pose constantly in different formations - in that way I am exactly like my father...scary.

Forrest and I at the Hedley

Go Broncos

Molly and I haveing drinks at the Hedley. I think she may be standing a foot in front of me because there is absolutely no way her head is bigger than mine. Or maybe I've turned my cranium just enough for the flatness to make it appear smaller. I am wide but flat girl - my superpower is when I turn sideways, I disappear.

Molly's niece and nephew got her a lei for graduation...she came into the Hedley in full graduation garb to shor Loren...who wasn't there... and showed up later only after Molly had change back into civilian wear - so she had to go back and re-don her super smart cape.

mini grads

Jake and Emily pose with Aunt Molly. Why those 2 kids are so big now, I'll never understand. I remember when Emily was maybe 2?? When they used to live in San Mateo. I still can't understand why she has boob buds....

chocoholics

mmmmm..chocolate. That's Emily with a chocolate smile, it looks like brown lipstick but that's really her trying to contain her insane sugar rush as she and Jake do sprints back and forth from the chocolate fountain to the table.

Like a pig in mud...

Finally getting around to writing about those lovely pictures of us ladies all sweaty and muddy. So 2 weekends ago, myself and a slew of other DGs flew down to San Diego for the weekend for 3 reasons...
  • Run the Camp Pendleton 10K Mud Run
  • See our first DG baby
  • Celebrate Andrea's birthday

So this 10K is through Camp Pendleton and there are obstacle courses, long stretches of sand, rivers, lakes, and killer hills. All the while you have young marines either encouraging you or hekkling you. Those kids must of had a blast yelling at us lazy civilians...as we struggle through their obstacle course

The pic above is of our team shirts...Jenny's nickname in college was Pigger...and Hiroko was Hog so after much deliberation we decided to extend the swine theme..
  • Pigger = Jenny
  • Hog = Hiroko
  • Pork Chop = Linh
  • Piglet = Andrea
  • Wilbur = Julie
  • Babe = Caroline
  • Bacon = Betty

See you there next year ladies!

Our Littlest Hannah

That's Clara, Julie's baby. Julie was my roomate in college for 2 years in the sorority house. She was the first one in our class to get married and the first one to have a baby. Marty (her husband) is Chinese by way of Australia...so if he starts talking really fast you can't understand him because of his thich Aussie accent...

At first Clara looked like all chinese but now...you can start to see more Julie.. those big expressive eyes are definately Julie. Linh and Hiroko think she has Julie nose bridge...the nostril end of the nose is definately daddy though. And that seemingly golden fuzz hair? who knows, Julie and Marty are both brunnettes...hmmmm

Leaning...over...

but the bar is closed... Jenny really wanted a picture of her standing by the hotel bar...because it was closed. But upon trying to lean on the bar, I guess she missed and fell over.

This is what happens when people hijack your camera

I'm a professional

"put it in a lower gear...i know, because i'm a triathlete" Those are word for word, what Hiroko told the pedicab man as he struggled uphill. And to prove he was stuggling, you can see the sweat seep through the ass of his pants. The best part is the assumption that he wasn't cycling correctly...nevermind that he had 4 women in the pedicab.

AHHHHH

look up above! This is what happens when 7 girls go out at night...sunburnt and tired...and haven't seen each other in a long time. Needless to say the amount of fun we had is equal in ratio to the loudness of our talkin/yelling and to how tired and/or hoarse our voices were the next day.

Ladies on the Loose

trying to leave...the bars are closed...but we can't seem to stop posing for pictures..
BTW - who is that douchebag in the background that is hijacking in our pics???

muddy wall

through the mud and over the wall...i'm sooo glad i'm not in the military...they would kick me out for my piss poor performance. I needed the aid of others to pass over both walls

muddy pits

riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...so this part consisted of crawling on your belly...on your elbows and trudging through with mud up to your chin...

muddy lake?

hmmmm...about chest deep...decent current...realized that swimming with running shoes is not my forte

Roxy Configuration 256

Seats up in the Element to fit bikes...without taking off the tires! I am now wondering if I should just get a bike rack..like the kind people use in their garages and put it inside my car..ha! At this point, we put the seats up, then strap the bikes to the sides...leaving a nice open area in the middle for bags and gear.

Newest Rider

Linh and her new Specialized Ruby Comp. This was her first group ride...Forrest and I took Linh out to Canada road last Sunday for about an hour. Her new bike is big pimpin and I love the way the bike shop sold it to her "just think, you won't need to upgrade" uh, ok - but what if she hates cycling? You just sold a beginner a full carbon bike...

Regardless, I am stoked to have more of my female friends start cycling so I can cycle at a more leisurely pace with them on the weekends and catch up on what's going on versus having Forrest cycle by me insisting that I can go faster.

Bug Eyed

Regardless it's just plain blurry.

I got my eyes dilated during an optometrist visit today during lunch and I'm still blurry. I got a lot of laughs at wearing my big bug eye sunglasses indorrs but it's required because apparently today needs to be the brightest day on the planet - the better to scorch my retinas with :)

Parellel Universe

Many times people wonder "what if"..."what if I decided on the other option?" "what if I said no...what if I said yes" This line of thinking can literally go on for eternity - but sometimes I wonder what my life would have been like if my parents had stayed in Korea. Even after almost 30 years in the United States, they haven't assimilated well enough to be comfortable leaving myself and my brother in a strange in between place of juggling 2 different cultures.

Sometimes this doesn't matter...because the bay area is such a hodge podge of cultures anyways. Other times, it makes one feel particularly left out.... like when your parents haven't met any of your friends, even friends you've had for years because they are uncomfortable speaking english. This has sometimes made me wonder why they even came here in the first place - especially if they had intented to maintain a completely Korean lifestyle.

Life as I know it would it have been much more restrictive if I had stayed in the homeland...but I wouldn't have really known the difference. You can't miss what you never had. Actually I'm sure my life in many ways would have been a lot easier..haha

Book Review: Dry

Just finished my first Augusten Burroughs book...Dry. A memoir about his alcoholism, as if the title didn't give that away. It's a memoir of a certain time in his life where he faced addiction and the other major life events that pushed and pulled him into an eventual recovery. I feel somewhat bad about saying the book is good...because all stories of addiction are sad. The more amazing the story of recovery, the more sad and damaging the raging addiction had to be.

I'm shamefully excited to move on to reading his other books that chronicle the events of his life. Should one reallybe taking so much enjoyment in other's apparent misfortune or discomfort? Well, if nothing else, he's probably been on the best seller list and is stinking rich now.
